A deep cyclone of African origin over the Western Mediterranean: diagnosis and numerical simulation

چکیده
From 19 to 22 December 1979, a deep cyclone evolved over the Western Mediterranean. Gusty winds of more than 30 m/s, as well as a strong pressure decrease to about 990 hPa were recorded in Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). ECMWF analyses are used for a diagnosis and numerical study of the case. Sensitivity experiments using the HIRLAM model are performed to assess the role of the surface sensible heat flux, latent heat release and orography on the genesis and evolution of the cyclone. At synoptic scale, the situation is governed by the instability of an upperlevel short wave. The cyclone developed within a notable baroclinic environment, which resulted from a cold advection from the northwest towards North Africa. The baroclinicity at first stages of the cyclogenesis is quantified by means of the Eady model. At latter stages, the evolution of the potential vorticity structures at high levels reveals a wide tropopause fold over the cyclone, as well as the presence of a strong anomaly associated with the low-level system. Sensitivity experiments reveal a notable cyclogenetic role of the latent heat release throughout the atmosphere in the deepening of the low, whereas no significant effect of the surface sensible heat flux is obtained for the simulation interval. On the other hand, an unusual cyclolytic role can be attributed to the northern ranges of the Mediterranean basin. Effectively, the low enlargement and deepening is constrained by a “wall effect”, which is a consequence of the interaction of the cyclonic flow and those northern mountainous systems.

Cyclones as the most important factor in the turbulence of mid-latitude regions are low pressure centers that have one or more closed Isobaric curves. Mid-latitude cyclones are responsible for transfer of the heat and moisture between the tropics and the polar regions. Mediterranean cyclones have the most important role in Iran's rainfalls and get from different tracks to the country and affect...
متن کاملWinter precipitation and cyclones in the Mediterranean region: future climate scenarios in a regional simulation
Future climate projections show higher/lower winter (Dec-Jan-Feb) precipitation in the northern/southern Mediterranean region than in present climate conditions. This paper analyzes the results of regional model simulations of the A2 and B2 scenarios, which confirm this opposite precipitation change and link it to the change of cyclone activity. The increase of the winter cyclone activity in fu...
متن کاملCyclogenesis in the lee of the Atlas Mountains: a factor separation numerical study
The initiation of a deep and severe impact Mediterranean cyclone in the lee of Atlas Mountains is investigated by a series of numerical experiments using the MM5 forecast model. Roles of orography, surface sensible heat flux and an upper-level potential vorticity anomaly are identified using factor separation method. Results of model simulations show that orography blocking is responsible for g...

In this paper the numerical simulation of flow field in the new design dynamic cyclone separator is investigated. The effects of different geometrical parameters such as impeller diameter, number of vanes, length and the location of impeller is investigated. The Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations with Reynolds stress turbulence model (RSM) were solved. The Eulerian-Lagrangian computation...

This paper qualifies the effect of different convection schemes and center-domains on the simulation of winter precipitation over Iran using RegCM3 numerical climate model. It is compressible, finite difference with hydrostatic equilibrium in sigma coordinate with a semi-implicit algorithm for reduction of horizontal diffusion. Iran experienced two dry and wet periods during winters of 1997 and...
